My top 6 albums of 2013

Well, it's that "Albums of the year list" time again...

Seeing as music is timeless and these lists are purely subjective, it seems only natural to me for my list to consist of those albums that have had the most pleasant effect on my perception throughout the last year, rather than confining myself to albums created or released this year.

I will not attempt any lengthy descriptions of the music, any such summaries seem woefully inadequate. A few simple adjectives should suffice... Have a listen to them!

#6 Hate Forest - Temple Forest

Otherworldly minimalist synth

#5 Thergothon - Fhtagn Nagh Yog-sothoth

Slow, grim, foreboding

#4 Ash Ra Tempel - Ash Ra Tempel

Intense, droning psych

#3 Graveland - Immortal Pride

Fuzzed-out, epic, messy

#2 Hate Forest - Sorrow

Driving, overwhelming, epic

#1 Amon Duul - Yeti

Intensely imaginative, rhythmic psych

2011-07-29 - Northumberland Arms - Jackal, Gross Jones, Culver, Charles Dexter Ward

Four live sets from the murky depths of Newcastle's drone scene.

Jackal - After you've sat watching old holiday videos from Morocco in your house all day, you are slowly crushed by a 60 foot dog made entirely of molasses...

Gross Jones - ...you wake to find you are being massaged by strange, calming nymphs whose very being is composed of frequencies. They are flattered by your compliments and your usual sense of foreboding is briefly abated.

Culver - After a while, the distractions of everyday life fade from earshot as you focus on the sound of far-off crickets. Every once in a while, you are sure you can hear the sound of waves on old rocks.

Charles Dexter Ward - Countless light-years away, unfathomable entities observe the struggle of humanity and uncharacteristically allow broad smiles to cross their lips, just for a moment.
